Just a few more helpful ideas:
If, like in your scenario, there’s extra black at the top, I confirm there’s nothing up there and just trim the video to allow session timecode sync.
Also once you place that sync point you can also hop into spot mode and just grabber click to punch in the session timecode.
Once I sync the video to that initial frame I like to move the sync point to the first frame of video (typically 1:00:00:00). So if I have multiple videos in a session I can sync them to whole hour timecode points easily.
As far as working in grid mode goes though, could you explain a little further why that’s all that important? I work in post and am always working in slip mode, as are many if not all of the other post engineers I know. Not that one way is any better than the other, just interested in your use of grid over slip.

Awesome tips – I like the idea of moving the sync point to the hour point to move stuff around later, nice.
Regarding slip vs grid, when youre working with video files they are created to a frame boundary, not a sample boundary.
If you are working in slip, you can move between frames, right? The video engine will show you a frame for the whole duration of the frame, but to sync it you should be on the frame boundary, right? So to be sure I’m on the frame boundary, I spot video files into PT constrained by a whole frame grid.
It also helps if you are moving files back and forth with video editors, such as temp music or SFX. If you’re off the frame edge and sending an AAF back to Media composer or the like, PT will add silence to the handles of your file to make sure its on a frame edge boundary at top and tail – great, you have sync, but not great, you have a new audio file, with a new name and new UID, which makes it hard to track back/relink when they in turn send it back to you, moved around/edited.
